150 words...
Each local candidate for the County Council Elections was allowed 150 words in the Kidderminster Shuttle. Here is what the Liberal team had to say...

Mike Oborski...
Kidderminster, St.Chads...
Local county councillor for 32 years and long- serving district councillor Mike Oborski says local priorities are:
Give local people a real say on the way in which local schools are run and sort out the chaos of the Tory school closures. The destruction of Lea Street and Stone First schools is an absolutely scandalous piece of Tory vandalism.
Continue the fight to get A&E and a birthing centre back to Kidderminster.
More police on the beat tackling crime, vandalism, nuisance and drug pushing.
Fight off the threat of Government spending on "Supporting People" which is going to hit Wyre Forest elderly hardest.
A decent concessionary fare scheme for the elderly on public transport.
Tackle the appalling state of roads and pavements, public transport and traffic flow problems.
Sort out matchday parking chaos on Chester Road South.
Scrap Council Tax.

Fran Oborski...
Kidderminster, St. George & St. Oswald...
Long serving district and county councillor Fran Oborski says :"I am horrified at the disgraceful decision to close Lea Street First School and the changes in catchment area for Offmore First School which will have a serious impact on the Hurcott Road area.
"The closure of Sladen means youngsters will be forced to go to the Sion Hill site when it becomes Wolverley's Lower School causing travel problems across a wide area. "
She says we need to:
Sort out the chaos of the Tory school closures.
Continue the fight to get A&E and a birthing centre back to Kidderminster.
More police on the beat tackling crime, nuisance and drugs.
Fight off the threat of Government spending on "Supporting People" which is going to hit local elderly hardest.

Graham Ballinger...
Chaddesley...
Long serving district councillor Graham Ballinger is the only "save our hospital" candidate in Chaddesley division.
He is appalled at the Tory county council's Wyre Forest Schools Review and totally supports parents and residents who have campaigned for Stone CE First School.
On the district council he is campaigning to clean up litter and mess.
Graham says:
Give people a real say on the future of local schools and sort out the chaos of closures.
Continue the fight to get A&E and a birthing centre back to Kidderminster.
More police on the beat tackling crime, nuisance, vandalism and drug pushing.
Fight off the threat of Government spending on "Supporting People" which is going to hit local elderly hardest.

Mike Price...
Kidderminster, St Mary's...
Constituency Liberal Party chairman Mike Price supports the Oldington Pathway Project and development of the extended school on the Birchen Coppice site.
While also supporting possible development of an extended St Mary's School, he is appalled at the closure of Lea Street School which will hit many Aggborough families hard.
There is an urgent need for economic regeneration in the Horsefair and along the Stourport Road.
Bring British Sugar Site back into employment use.
Sort out the chaos of the Tory school closures.
Continue the fight to get back A&E and a birthing centre.
More police on the beat tackling crime, nuisance and drugs.
Fight off the threat of Government spending on "Supporting People" which will hit elderly hardest.
A decent public transport concessionary fare scheme for the elderly.
Tackle the appalling state of roads and pavements, public transport and traffic flow problems.

Rachel Lewis...
Cookley, Wolverley, Wribbenhall...
As a mother with a young family, district councillor Rachel Lewis is a passionate believer in provision of children's services and easily accessible schools for our youngest children.
She is worried about the potentially dangerous traffic situation on Wolverley Road if Sion Hill Middle School is used as the Lower School of Wolverley High School for several years.
She says:
Give local people a real say in the way in which local schools are run and sort out the chaos of the Tory school closures.
Continue the fight to get A and E and a birthing centre back to Kidderminster.
More police on the beat tackling crime, nuisance and drugs.

The Hitchikers Guide To The Galaxy
...The Hitchikers Guide To The Galaxy opens at Kidderminster's Warehouse Cinema on Friday 29th April.
It is a well known fact that according to "The Hitchikers Guide To The Galaxy" the answer to "life, the universe and everything" is "42".
It is lesser known fact that the number of Councillors on Wyre Forest District Council is exactly and precisely - "42".

County Hall - a touch of reality...
The County Council is as snug as a bug in a rug! Everything is clappy happy and we all live together in eachother's pockets at County Hall. That is if you are to believe Tories, Labour and Liberal-Democrats. It is just a geat old boys club for them.
But on tonight's BBC Radio Hereford & Worcester County Council Election "phone in" it was Liberal Councillor Graham Ballinger who drove home the real message!
Here in Wyre Forest our schools are being wrecked, our highway repairs are under funded and we always get the worst possible deal out of the County.
While the others patted eachother on the back Graham told it as it is!

Elections are strange...
Elections are strange. The average voter views them with varying degrees of horror and cynicism. Considering the posturing of national politicians and spin doctors and the convulsions of sound-bite hungry national media I am not surprised.
There is another election campaign. This is the election of volunteers - the foot soldiers - who look for no personal gain and who slog their guts out canvassing and leafletting in the cause of making their own area a better place in which to live.
As I write this I am so exhausted that I can barely write. My feet are on fire. Every joint in my body aches. I am totally and absolutely exhausted. I am so tired I can hardly think. I entered this campaign as a County Councillor. I may or may not finish this campaign as a County Councillor. If I win again I will, at least, be able to continue to fight, campaign and crusade for the causes and outcomes which I believe to be essential.
So why do other people - equally exhausted themselves - campaign for my election or for the election of Fran, Graham, Rachel and Mike Price? They put their faith in a vision and a cause. They put their trust in us. It is their trust that renews our energy in that same vision and cause and which will give us the energy and commitment to stagger into another day of campaigning tomorrow!
Oh Yes! We intend to win!

Sunflower mystery...
Local Liberal Councillors are seeking a solution to one of Kidderminster's little mysteries. Who put the sunflower on top of Land Oak House?!
Cllr Mike Oborski explained today "at the junction of Kidderminster's Birmingham Road and Chester Road North there is a metal sunflower projecting from the roof of Land Oak House which use to be the offices of Wyre Foret District Council's Panning Department."
"The building is now being sold off for private development."
"We would love to know who climbed up to position the sunflower? When did they do it? Why did they do it?"
"It's one of those funny little Kidderminster mysteries. We've heard all the rumours and stories. We'd love to know the answer. Does anybody out there know the real truth?"

INTERVIEW: The GO-BETWEENS talk about the trials of growing older and recording their latest album Oceans Apart in London.
IN rock 'n' roll, even more than in life, it often feels like there's an uncrossable ocean of time between the past and the present. Staring down the portrait gallery of rock history, when the sounds of 1974 and 1977 seems poles apart, what could the sounds of 1981, when Australia's Go-Betweens made their first album, have to do with 2005?

Crossed Wyres!
The front page lead story in the Express & Star tonight reveals that the "Independent Consultants" who reported on the numbers of taxis needed in Wyre Forest bungled their figures - using information relating to Wyre in Lancashire.
On Wednesday night the Council voted to defer a decision because there were so many "holes" in the report. The Environment & Economic Regeneration Policy & Scrutiny Panel chaired by Fran was asked to hold a special meeting to investigate and report back.
This further revelation tonight deals a death blow to any credibility and public confidence in the report!
Fran, as Chairman of the Panel, was not informed of this latest development by the Council and was left to read about it in the press. When she phoned the Leader of the Council it turned out that he didn't know anything about it either. So who exactly did know and when?
The Express & Star report...
Consultants really get their Wyres crossed
Consultants bungled a £10,000 taxi survey for Wyre Forest cabbies – by confusing the area with Wyre Council in Lancashire, 130 miles away.
The Wyre Forest Taxi Drivers’ Association had hoped the survey, for which it paid £10,000, would back their calls for a limited increase in vehicles for hire in the Wyre Forest.
Now angry taxi drivers say the survey carried out by the consultants was riddled with more than 40 faults which included data from the wrong Wyre, getting the numbers of licensed vehicles wrong as well as the fees they charge.

Blaze a disaster waiting to happen!
Local Councillors have called for the immediate demolition of Kidderminster's derelict Comberton Arms pub after it was set ablaze last night.
Cllr Mike Oborski explained "The Comberton Arms has been derelict, out of use and boarded up for some time. Wyre Forest Community Housing are currently in the process of purchasing the site with a view to demolishing the pub and redeveloping the site, along with an old adjacent disused garage site, for housing."
"Last night - mid evening - the upper storey was set ablaze with flames shooting out of an upper story window and up the chimney stack. The blaze was extinguished by Hereford and Worcester Fire Service. Obviously it is too early to be sure but it looks like vandalism."
Cllr Oborski said "We have been warning for weeks that this would happen! It's been a disaster waiting to happen. Unfortunately the owners would not permit demolishion until legalities are finalised and the site formally transfers to Wyre Forest Community Housing."
"We will be talking to Wyre Forest Community Housing and the Fire Service in the morning. We want pressure put on to get the building down now before there is a further incident with more serious consequences."

Time Team?
"We thought for a moment that Television's "Time Team" had been excavating at the junction of Kidderminster's Cherry Orchard and Offmore" an angry County Councillor commented today.
However, when local Liberal County Councillor Mike Oborski investigated "It turned out to be yet another County Council pot hole - but this one had worn right down to an old cobbled road surface below."
Cllr Oborski said "It's simply another pot hole but this one is truly ridiculous".
"On the door step the state of our roads and pavements is becoming one of the big issues of the County Council election campaign. People are sick and tired of the state of our roads and pavements. Getting this sorted has got to be a local priority!"

SAFER COMMUNITIES…
In recent years the share of the Council Tax which has gone to the Police has rocketted -rising in just three years (2001-2004) by a staggering 65%. Meanwhile we are seeing little or nothing in terms of extra policing in the community for all that extra money we are paying. We were promised more Police on the beat but we have seen little sign of them.

The outcome of the Wyre Forest Schools Reorganisation debate at County Hall is a disaster. Why? Because so many good schools are simply going to be swept away — “if it isn’t broken why fix it?” Why? Because there are more questions and uncertainties now than there were at the start of the process? A new County Council will have to look again at what is happening if the situation is not to collapse in chaos.

Wyre Forest elderly will be hardest hit...
"Elderly people in Wyre Forest look set to be the main victims of Government cuts in funding for local services" Wyre Forest Liberal Parliamentary Candidate Cllr. Fran Oborski revealed today.
Cllr Mrs Oborski explained today "At County level Government funding for the Supporting People Fund is has fallen from £16.5 million in 2003 – 2004 to £15.9 million for 2004 - 2005 and is set to fall to £15.2 million in 2005 - 20066."
"This works out as a cut of some £300 per person supported and is yet another glaring example of this out of touch Labour Government totally ignoring the funding needs of Worcestershire people. "
"However, the cuts in Supporting People Funding which the Labour Government is imposing on Worcestershire County Council are likely to have a greater impact in Wyre Forest than across the rest of the County!"
"The reason why Wyre Forest will be hit hardest is very simple. Historically Wyre Forest has always given a far higher level of support to elderly residents via its OAP Warden Service and subsidised Alarm Service than other Districts. The problem is that, having had such an excellent level of provision we now have far more to cut and stand to face a disproportionately higher share of any County wide cuts."
"This is potentially disastrous news for many elderly residents in Wyre Forest and we are going to have to do everything possible to minimise the blow. Elderly residents must NOT be allowed to suffer as a result of irresponsible and dangerous funding cuts by central Government."

Uncounted Postal Votes from last year's elections discovered in Birmingham...
After the Birmingham Postal vote scandal comes this from the web log of Birmingham Lib-Dem Group Leader Cllr John Hemming. What he reveals is both truly stunning and utterly scandalous...
Deepthroat blows whistle from Elections Office I thought nothing could surprise me. Oddly enough something did today. I was told by someone in the elections office that there had been "Envelope 4s" mislaid during the local elections and not counted. There was a plan to "get rid" of them, but one or more staff were unhappy about this and kept them.
Envelope 4s are the postal ballots taken to the polling station and collected by the presiding officer. There can be 1 ballot or 20 ballots in one envelope.
I was told that on the 4th Floor of the Elections Office in the Archive Room which is the second door on the right and has a yale lock that in the little room off the side high up there was a box with 200 Envelope 4s in it.
The political parties had a meeting with the police and the elections officials and we discussed aspects of the election procedure. I made the point that I wanted to have a facility whereby the elections office could be inspected. At the end of the meeting I explained I had received a detailed allegation and wished to check for evidence and that I didn't want anyone to be able to warn the elections office that I wanted to inspect it with the police.

Things have been building up to this for some time! This could be extremely serious.
Now The Worcester Evening News reports...
CUTS HIT THE VULNERABLE
The most vulnerable people in the county could soon have some of their most valuable services taken away.
A programme that helps about 10,000 people in Worcestershire to maintain an independent life is to have its budget slashed by more than £3m over the next few years - at a cost of around £300 per person.
The Supporting People service helps people to set up home, supports them with shopping and errands, monitors medication, and offers security and counselling.
It also helps with legal services, access to community organisations and problems with racial harassment, among many other services.
But the initiative, which was set up by the Government in 2003, will be hit hard by the latest cutbacks. Exactly how Worcestershire will be affected remains to be seen as the services are awaiting review.
Funding for Supporting People nationwide has gradually been cut from a peak of £1.81bn in 2003-4 to £1.72bn for 2005-6 and a planned further reduction to 1.7bn by 2006-7.
At county level it means funding has fallen from £16.5m in 2003-4 to £15.9m for 2004-5 and to £15.2m in 2005-6.
Eventually, Worcestershire's share of the national pot could fall to as little as £11.8m, a reduction of £3.4m over the next few years.
The service is administered by the county council, which works with the six district councils, three primary care trusts and the West Mercia Probation Service.
Liz Eyre, Worcestershire County Council cabinet member with responsibility social services, said: "I am particularly concerned that changing the way the grant is distributed is effectively moving money away from Worcestershire into metropolitan areas."
"The distribution formula is complex and the County Councils Network's (CCN) view is that the formula is based on the flawed methodology, such as the inappropriate use of the deprivation index, ethnicity levels and population density."

Sad day for education...
“The decision of the Schools Sub-Committee to simply rubber stamp the Tory proposals for the reorganisation of schools in Wyre Forest is nothing short of a public disgrace” Kidderminster’s Liberal County Councillors say in a joint statement today.
Cllr Fran Oborski and Cllr Mike Oborski say “This Committee is supposed to be a last ditch watch dog on behalf of the community and instead it has completely and totally failed the children, teachers, people and communities of Wyre Forest.”
“They have rubber stamped a package which will see the destruction of our superb First schools, eliminate our excellent Middle Schools and create reduced size High Schools in Kidderminster without viable Sixth Forms.”
“On top of that they have chosen to ignore all the totally unanswered questions about catchment areas and who will be able to go to which schools!”
“This is a terribly sad day for education and schools in Wyre Forest and the consequences will be with us for decades. The true scale of the catastrophe will only become clear as the new set up is forced through and many people discover that they cannot get the school of their choice for their youngsters and that many excellent schools and educational opportunities have been swept away!”

How to be in three places at once....
Mike Dixon, who is "fighting" the Kidderminster St. Chads seat on Worcestershire County Council against Liberal County Councillor Mike Oborski, may be in need of more than a little assistance! He desperately needs to be in three places at once!
You see the same Mr Dixon is also the Lib-Dem Parliamentary Candidate for the Birmingham Edgbaston seat!
Meanwhile, yes, the same Mr Dixon is also Lib-Dem Constituency Organiser for the Warwickshire Stratford-upon-Avon Parliamentary seat!
It should be extremely interesting to see how he is going to be in three places at once!
Never the ones to be unhelpful we have come up with the answer to his problem.
If he gets one of these he can jump around in time and space to his hearts content...

Taxi report chaos...
Local Liberal Councillors say that they "sympathise with Wyre Forest taxi drivers who think that they are yet again being taken for a ride by the District Council".
Liberal Group Leader Cllr Mike Oborski explained "The Council has arranged a briefing on Monday (11th April) evening just for Councillors on the outcome of the independent survey into the level of need for taxis in Wyre Forest."
"The study has been paid for by the taxi drivers so you might have expected them to be invited to the meeting. Instead they were first told that they would be informed of the contents in a few weeks time and then, when they pressed the matter, they have secured a briefing from the Chief Executive on Tuesday (12th April)."
"Furthermore taxi drivers are concerned because they have been told that the report is incomplete and has been referred back for "clarification"."
"Having paid the £9,000 for the study they want to know what is going on and frankly I don't blame them."
"The study is essential to the who issue of either contined taxi regulation or the introduction of taxi deregilation which has been a really controversial hot potato in Wyre Forest over recent months."
"Given the track record of Council inspired chaos and misunderstanding on this issue one might reasonably have expected Tory Council bosses and Council Officers to get their act together and to keep the taxi drivers fully on board and fully informed. Instead they have botched the whole thing yet again."
"The Leader of the Council needs to get a grip on the issue and make sure that that the taxi drivers are fully involved. It is, after all, their livelihoods which are affected."
"We also need an early public statement from the Council to tell the public exactly what is happening. It is, after all, the people of Wyre Forest who rely on the local taxi service."
